Deann holds a BFA from Oregon State University in Applied Visual Arts (2006), and an MA in Sustainable Design from Minneapolis College of Art and Design (2015). She operates a design practice, Flamme Rouge Creative, and completes personal artwork based in the use of natural objects as Ponderosa.
PROFESSIONAL Deann is passionate about how design can be used as a tool to improve the lives of people and the state of the planet. She began her practice as an in-house specialist at big brands. With time spent at Starbucks, Nike, Danner Boots, and Yakima Racks, as well as committing to pro bono and small cause-based clients, Deann has developed a keen sense for how to speak to consumers in a way they can connect with, as well as a strong sense of marketing strategy. Deann pursued an MA thesis focused on developing environmentally beneficial apparel for female cyclists utilizing cutting-edge wool production techniques and agricultural waste products, and sought a university-level teaching position in order to pass on the concepts of sustainable graphic design to the next generation.
PERSONAL Deann creates mixed media artwork using natural materials and ancient recipes. Building off the understanding gained during her fibers research, she has branched into dye making using local and natural materials, as well as waste products of other processes. She creates embroidered works as well as digital and analog paintings that play with themes of environmental and biological affinity and man's twisted relationship with the natural environment.
CURRENTLY Deann is currently full time instructor of graphic design at Oregon State University, and an adjunct instructor in sustainable design at Minneapolis College of Art and Design, managing to give back to both her alma maters in meaningful ways.
